How to calculate eBay shipping costs
- Weigh the packed item. Put the item in its box with the packing material and weigh it. USPS rounds up to the next price step, so a 1 lb 1 oz package pays the 2 lb price.
- Measure the box. You only need the size for boxes bigger than 1 cubic foot or longer than 22 inches. Everything smaller is priced by weight alone.
- Pick the zone. Use the buyer's ZIP code once the item sells. Before it sells, zone 5 is a fair average, and zone 8 is the worst case.
- Compare services. Check Ground Advantage, Priority Mail and the Flat Rate boxes, then add the cost to your price or charge it as shipping.
Post Office price vs eBay Labels price
USPS has two price levels. Retail is what you pay at the Post Office counter. Commercial is what you pay when you buy a label online, which is how eBay Labels works. The label is paid from your eBay earnings and printed at home, and tracking is uploaded to the order for you.
Prices below are for zone 5.
Which USPS service to use for eBay orders
USPS Ground Advantage
The cheapest choice for most eBay packages. Delivery in 2 to 5 business days, up to 70 lb, with tracking and up to $100 of insurance included. It is the only service that takes boxes over 108 inches in length plus girth, up to 130 inches, at an oversized price.
USPS Priority Mail
Delivery in 1 to 3 business days, up to 70 lb and 108 inches in length plus girth, with tracking and up to $100 of insurance. Worth it when the buyer paid for faster shipping, or when the price is close to Ground Advantage, which often happens at close zones.
Priority Mail Flat Rate
One price for any weight up to 70 lb and any distance, as long as the item fits in the USPS box or envelope. Best for small, heavy items going far. The boxes are free from the Post Office.
USPS Media Mail
A low price for books, CDs, DVDs, printed music and similar media, in 2 to 8 business days. The price depends on weight only, not on distance.
USPS shipping zones explained
The zone is set by the distance between your ZIP code and the buyer's. Enter both ZIP codes in the USPS zone chart to get the exact zone.
Dimensional weight and large boxes
Light items in big boxes are priced by size. These USPS rules apply to Ground Advantage and Priority Mail, both at the Post Office and with eBay Labels:
- Bigger than 1 cubic foot: multiply length, width and height in inches and divide by 166. You pay for that weight when it is higher than the real weight.
- Longer than 22 inches: add $4.50.
- Longer than 30 inches: add $10.00 for Ground Advantage or $21.00 for Priority Mail.
- Bigger than 2 cubic feet: add $21.00 for Ground Advantage or $35.00 for Priority Mail.
- Over 108 inches in length plus girth: Ground Advantage charges its oversized price, and Priority Mail does not accept the box.
Enter the box size in the calculator to include these charges. A smaller box is often the easiest way to cut the cost.
Calculated, flat or free shipping on eBay
- Calculated shipping: eBay shows each buyer a price based on the package weight, size and their location. Good for heavy items, where zone 1 and zone 8 prices are far apart.
- Flat shipping: every buyer pays the same amount. Use the zone 8 price if you do not want to lose money on buyers far away.
- Free shipping: the buyer pays nothing extra, and you add the label cost to the item price. Check your margin with the US eBay fee calculator.

How do I calculate shipping costs for an eBay item?
Pack the item, weigh the box and measure it. Then find the USPS zone between your ZIP code and the buyer's. Enter the weight, zone and box size in the calculator above. It picks the USPS price for that weight and zone and shows the Post Office price next to the eBay Labels price.
Is an eBay label cheaper than the Post Office?
Yes, for almost every package. A 1 lb Ground Advantage package to zone 5 costs $10.95 at the Post Office and $8.74 as a commercial label, 20% less.
What is the cheapest way to ship on eBay?
For most packages under a few pounds, USPS Ground Advantage is the cheapest. For a heavy item in a small box, a Priority Mail Flat Rate box can cost less, because the price is the same for any weight up to 70 lb. Books, CDs and DVDs can go by Media Mail.
Does eBay charge fees on shipping?
Yes. eBay's final value fee is a percentage of the total amount the buyer pays, including shipping and sales tax. Use the US eBay fee calculator to see the fee on your sale.
Who pays for shipping on eBay?
You decide when you list. You can charge calculated shipping based on the buyer's location, charge one flat amount, or offer free shipping and include the cost in your price. In every case you buy the label after the item sells.
What is a USPS shipping zone?
A zone is the distance between the ZIP code you ship from and the ZIP code you ship to, from zone 1 for local mail to zone 8 for the other side of the country. Ground Advantage and Priority Mail cost more at higher zones. Flat Rate and Media Mail prices do not change with the zone.
What is dimensional weight?
For boxes bigger than one cubic foot (1,728 cubic inches), USPS works out a weight from the box size: length times width times height in inches, divided by 166. If that number is higher than the real weight, you pay for that weight instead.
How much does it cost to ship a 1 lb package?
To zone 5, USPS Ground Advantage costs $10.95 at the Post Office and $8.74 with an online label. Priority Mail costs $13.05 and $12.97. Closer zones cost less and farther zones cost more.
How current are these prices?
The calculator uses the USPS price list that took effect on July 12, 2026 (USPS Notice 123), checked on September 15, 2026. The price eBay shows when you buy the label is the final price.
