How to start selling
Create a Trade Me account and set a New Zealand bank account for Ping transfers. List your item with photos, price and shipping options. If you sell regularly or are GST registered, switch on in-trade status, which changes your fees.
Seller questions
Not for casual sellers. From 10 March 2026 Trade Me removed the 7.9% Success Fee for casual sellers in most Marketplace categories. Transaction fees, optional extras and withdrawal fees still apply. In-trade sellers still pay Success Fees of 5.9% to 11.9% of item plus shipping price, capped at $499, with a 15% discount for Top Sellers.
Ping is Trade Me's built-in card payment option and is offered on every Marketplace listing. When a buyer pays with Ping, the money shows in your Ping balance instantly, less a 2.19% transaction fee on item plus shipping, or 1.89% for Top Sellers. Afterpay payments cost 4.95%, and cash has no fee.
In My Trade Me, go to My balances, select Manage Ping, then Transfer out. You can only transfer to a New Zealand bank account and must transfer the full balance. Transfers requested before 2:45 pm are sent that evening and can take 1 to 2 days to arrive. Turn off automatic transfer out first if it is on.
It depends on your situation, and you decide. You are likely in-trade if you regularly sell online, buy or make goods to resell, are GST registered, or have staff. Items bought for personal use are usually not in-trade. Trade Me can turn on the in-trade label if your volume, value and consistency of trading make it clear.
In-trade sellers can apply if the buyer has not replied within two business days, has not paid within a week, or both parties agreed to cancel. Go to My Trade Me, Sold, pick the listing and select refund of your success fee, or ask Tautoko bot. If the buyer paid with Ping, the refund happens automatically with the buyer's refund.
Log in to Trade Me Help, open the chat with Tautoko bot and say 'I want to close my account.' Once closed, you can no longer use Trade Me, your feedback and profile are hidden, and your remaining account balance is refunded less a $5.00 processing fee. Trade Me keeps site history for at least seven years under tax law.
On the Trade Me website, go to My Trade Me, then My balances, View account statement and GST receipts, and print the month you need. Receipts cover listing fees, success fees, promotional extras and Book a Courier charges. Marketplace receipts are ready on the first day of each month for the month before. They are not available in the app.
Use the chat icon in the Help centre to talk to Tautoko Bot, which answers basic questions 24/7. If the bot cannot help, tell it you want to leave a message for the Wellington-based Support team. Your query joins a priority queue and the team aims to reply within 1 to 2 business days. Logging in first keeps your chat history.
