How to start selling
Sign in or create an Etsy account, go to etsy.com/sell and open a shop by choosing a shop name, adding listings, and entering payment and billing details. Etsy requires identity verification and a bank account for Etsy Payments. Your country must be eligible for Etsy Payments to open a new shop.
Seller questions
US sellers pay $0.20 to publish each listing, which renews every four months or when the item sells. When you make a sale, Etsy takes a 6.5% transaction fee on the full order amount, including shipping, and a payment processing fee of 3% plus $0.25 for US shops. Some new shops also pay a one-time setup fee, and Offsite Ads fees apply to orders from those ads.
Sales go into your Etsy Payment account, where Etsy deducts fees. The remaining balance is deposited to the bank account you add in Shop Manager under Finances. You can set the deposit schedule to daily, weekly, biweekly or monthly. Sellers in some countries receive payouts through a Payoneer account instead of a local bank.
Etsy can place a reserve on part of your funds, which is common for new shops or shops with more cases or disputes, and releases the money after a set period. Deposits can also fail if your bank details are out of date. Check the Payment account page in Shop Manager, which shows available funds, any reserve, and your next deposit date.
In Shop Manager, go to Settings, then Options, and choose to close your shop. Closing the shop removes your listings from the marketplace but keeps your Etsy account, so you can still buy. Any money left in your Payment account is still deposited on your schedule, so check that your bank details are current. You can reopen a closed shop later.
Closing your account is a separate step from closing your shop. Go to your account settings and choose Close Account. If you do not see the button, you likely have an amount due on your statement or an open case, and you must pay the balance or resolve the case first. Closed accounts lose access to purchases, messages and shop data.
Sellers set their own return and exchange policy, which can include not accepting returns, and it is shown on each listing. Separately, buyers covered by Etsy Purchase Protection can get a refund if an order does not arrive, arrives damaged, or does not match the listing. Sellers must still follow consumer laws, such as withdrawal rights for many EU and UK sales.
Etsy files Form 1099-K for US sellers who pass the IRS threshold, which is now more than $20,000 in gross sales and more than 200 transactions in a calendar year, and some states set lower thresholds. The form is available in your Shop Manager. Etsy also collects and remits sales tax in US states with marketplace facilitator laws.
Etsy can suspend or restrict a shop for breaking its Seller Policy or Creativity Standards, for example reselling items that are not handmade, vintage or supplies, intellectual property complaints, unpaid bills, failed identity checks, or many unresolved cases. Etsy emails the reason when possible. You can reply to that email or contact Etsy Support to appeal.
Go to the Etsy Help Center while signed in, search for your topic, and use the Contact support option at the bottom of the help article to send a message or request help by chat or call where offered. Include your shop name and order numbers so the team can find your account.
