How to start selling
Register a personal or business eBay account and select Sell to create your first listing. eBay asks you to set up payouts by adding a checking account and verifying your identity and tax details. New sellers may start with selling limits that rise as they build a sales history.
Seller questions
Most US sellers get up to 250 free listings a month, then pay $0.35 per extra listing. When an item sells, eBay charges a final value fee, which is 13.6% of the total sale up to $7,500 in most categories, plus a per-order fee of $0.30 on orders of $10 or less or $0.40 on larger orders. Some categories, such as books, jewelry and handbags, use different rates.
eBay sends your sales proceeds, minus fees, to the checking account you add in your payout settings. You can also add a Visa or Mastercard debit card for express payouts, which arrive within about 30 minutes for a $2.00 fee per payout. Payouts can be held if your registration details do not match, for legal compliance reasons, or when eBay sees unusual account activity.
Daily payouts are the default and are started every day of the week. You can switch to weekly payouts on Tuesdays, biweekly payouts every second Tuesday, or monthly payouts on the first Tuesday of the month. After eBay starts a payout, it typically takes another 1 to 3 business days for the money to clear in your checking account.
Before you request closure, pay all fees, bring your available funds to zero, cancel subscriptions such as an eBay Store, and finish open bids, returns, disputes and pending payouts. Accounts with restrictions must contact eBay first. Closure usually takes 14 days from the request and can take up to 60 days if you had recent transactions or disputes. You lose your feedback and purchase and sales history.
When an account is closed, eBay deletes or anonymizes personal data, but keeps some information for legal, tax, fraud prevention and debt collection reasons. If your account was in good standing and not restricted or suspended, you can ask eBay to reopen it during the closure period. Otherwise you would need to register a new account.
Sellers choose their own return policy, including no returns. However, the eBay Money Back Guarantee still lets buyers get a refund if an item did not arrive, arrived damaged or faulty, or does not match the listing. Buyers generally have 30 days from the actual or estimated delivery date to open a request, and eBay can step in if the seller does not resolve it.
eBay files Form 1099-K for US sellers who pass the IRS reporting threshold. After the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, the federal threshold is more than $20,000 in gross payments and more than 200 transactions in a calendar year. Some states use lower thresholds. Selling income can still be taxable even if you do not receive a form, so keep your own records.
eBay can limit or suspend selling when an account falls below its seller performance standards, for example because of high transaction defect rates, late shipments or cases closed without seller resolution, or when it breaks listing policies or cannot be verified. Check the notice in Messages and your Seller Hub performance page, fix the cause, and follow the steps eBay gives to appeal or restore the account.
Sign in and go to Help and Contact, pick the topic that matches your issue, and eBay shows the contact options available for it, which can include chat, a scheduled call back or email. Business sellers and eBay Store subscribers may get extra support options. Being signed in matters because eBay needs to see your account to help.
