Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ

How are eBay fees calculated for items?

eBay charges a final value fee when your item sells: a percentage of the total amount of the sale (item price, shipping charged to the buyer and sales tax) plus a fixed per-order fee. The percentage depends on the category and on whether you have an eBay Store. Insertion fees and optional listing upgrades are charged when you list, and Promoted Listings are charged when a promoted item sells.

What percentage of a sale does eBay take?

On eBay.com most categories pay a final value fee of 13.6% of the total amount of the sale up to $7,500 (2.35% above that) plus a per-order fee of $0.30 for orders up to $10 and $0.40 above $10; a Basic Store or higher pays 12.7%. On eBay.co.uk business sellers pay 12.9% in most categories plus a 0.35% regulatory operating fee and the same 30p / 40p per-order fee, while UK private sellers pay no selling fees. Categories such as media, guitars, trainers, watches and electronics have their own rates: pick the category in the calculator to see them.

Why are eBay fees high?

The fee is charged on the whole amount the buyer pays, including shipping and sales tax, so a listing with paid shipping costs more in fees than the item price suggests. You can lower fees with an eBay Store subscription (lower rates in most categories and more free listings), by qualifying for Top Rated Plus (10% off the final value fee) and by staying within your monthly free listings so you pay no insertion fees.

Is there a separate payment processing fee on eBay?

No. Since eBay moved all sellers to managed payments, payment processing is included in the final value fee. There is no PayPal fee and no separate payment fee; the fixed part is the per-order fee ($0.30 / $0.40 on eBay.com, 30p / 40p on eBay.co.uk). Buyers registered in another country add an international fee on the total amount of the sale: 1.65% on eBay.com, and 1.05% to 2% on eBay.co.uk depending on the buyer's region.

Is paying for an eBay Store worth it?

It depends on your volume. On eBay.com a seller without a store gets 250 free listings a month and pays 13.6% in most categories; a Basic Store gives more free listings and 12.7% in most categories, with bigger discounts in electronics, cameras, computers and other categories. On eBay.co.uk a Shop mainly buys free listings and a lower listing fee once they run out. Run your typical sale through the calculator with and without a store to see what the lower rate saves you each month, and compare that with the subscription price.
