A generic eBay error whose quoted text names the real problem, most often package dimensions below the shipping service's minimum.

Why this happens

eBay wraps several validation failures in error 36; the text in quotes explains the real problem. The most common one is package dimensions below the minimum size of the selected shipping service, or a missing primary category. Why eBay enforces this: eBay uses code 36 as a wrapper for many different validation rules. The real reason is always in the quoted part of the message, and it is usually a carrier rule, such as a minimum parcel size, or a missing required field. When it usually happens: Sellers most often see it after changing the shipping policy or package dimensions, especially with postal services that set a minimum for length plus width plus height.

Example Wrong Settings

Package is 10 x 5 x 2 cm with a shipping service that requires length + height + width of at least 230 mm.

How to fix it

  1. Read the text in quotes inside the error; that is the actual problem.
  2. For package size messages, open the listing's package settings in 3Dsellers and raise the dimensions to the carrier's minimum, or pick a shipping policy with a service that accepts small packages.
  3. For a missing primary category, set a valid category on the listing.
  4. Publish again.

How to prevent it

Save realistic default package dimensions for each product type, never the size of the item itself, and test a new shipping policy on one listing before assigning it in bulk.
