Why this happens

The SKU (custom label) on the listing or on a variation is longer than eBay's 50-character limit. Why eBay enforces this: eBay stores the SKU (custom label) in a field limited to 50 characters, and uses it to match orders to inventory. Longer SKUs are refused rather than cut, so matching stays exact. When it usually happens: It usually appears with SKU templates that combine several attributes, or with supplier SKUs that include long product names. On eBay's local sites this error reads as follows. French: La référence article est limitée à 50 caractÚres.

Example Wrong Settings

SKU built from a template like BRAND-MODEL-COLOR-SIZE-SUPPLIER-DATE comes out at 62 characters.

How to fix it

  1. In 3Dsellers, open the listing and check the SKU on the listing and on each variation.
  2. Shorten any SKU above 50 characters. If a SKU template generates them, shorten the template.
  3. Publish again.

How to prevent it

Keep SKU templates short with abbreviations for attributes, and store long supplier codes in a separate field instead of the SKU.

SKU is TSHIRT-BLK-M-2026 (17 characters).
